Could you share your personal journey of integrating fitness and mindfulness into your life?
Yan Jun:

My fitness journey began during the COVID-19 circuit breaker when my sister and I decided to work out together at home, following YouTube workout videos just for the fun of it! Once restrictions eased, we started to join fitness classes, which made me realize how much I enjoyed not just getting stronger but also the mental clarity it provided. Over time, working out became an essential part of my life, shaping not only my physique but also my resilience and confidence.

Kah Fa:

As a working Dad who spends most of my time either at work or taking care of/spending time with my daughter, I always make sure I find pockets of time to work out or for my hobbies. On days that I work from home, I will squeeze in a 45 mins workout during lunch time (either go for a run, a swim or hit the gym).

In the night, after I put my daughter to bed, that’s when I hop online and play a game or 2 with my friends, catch a show on Netflix, spend some time cleaning and sorting out my toys and cards collection, or go for a night run.

Basically, it’s time for me to relax and do things that I like.

How does regular exercise help you maintain mental balance and stay mindful in your day-to-day life?
Yan Jun:
Regular exercise is my sanctuary—it’s where I disconnect from daily pressures and focus on myself. Whether it’s the focused intensity of a workout or the rhythmic cadence of a run, these moments bring me a sense of peace and clarity. Listening to music during my workouts, adds to this feeling of mindfulness. It’s like I’m shut off from the world, immersed in my own ME-TIME! This combination helps me feel present, refreshed, and capable, which carries over into how I manage stress and navigate daily life.
Kah Fa:
It makes me feel more alert and aware of things (sharp mind). And it helps to keep me physically in shape to meet the demands of my work (events) and family commitments (play and spend quality time with my kid).
Aside from exercise, what other practices do you rely on to stay grounded when life gets overwhelming with work or family commitments?
Yan Jun:

Besides exercise, one of my go-to practices is immersing myself in Mandopop music. I deeply appreciate how the lyrics and Chinese characters carry profound meaning and resonate on an emotional level. This connection allows me to pause and reflect, bringing a sense of calm and perspective during busy or stressful times. Especially songs by JJ Lin 😉. I also find comfort in enjoying good food—there’s nothing like savoring a delicious plate of Hokkien mee to lift my spirits and remind me to appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Kah Fa:

Other than exercise, I usually play video games to take my mind off from whatever is happening. And one of my hobbies is collecting designer toys and trading cards; things that help to spark joy for me.

How do you ensure your mental and emotional health remains a priority despite the demands of a fast-paced life?
Yan Jun:
Prioritizing my mental health means establishing routines that include exercise and mindfulness as non-negotiable. I’ve learned to set boundaries to protect my time and energy, ensuring I don’t compromise my well-being. Checking in with myself regularly—asking how I’m feeling and what I need—helps me adjust my schedule if necessary to include restorative activities.
Kah Fa:
For me, it’s always putting myself first. Putting myself as the focus and core, because if I’m in a good state, everything that I do will be of better quality and yield better results. Also it’s about knowing and trusting in your own capabilities, so I don’t get stressed out because I know whatever comes, I will be able to handle it.

For those new to mindfulness or struggling to find balance, what’s a simple first step they can take today to start their journey?
Yan Jun:
Start with just 30 minutes a day dedicated to stillness. Whether it’s a quiet morning moment to take deep breaths, a walk without distractions, or making a simple cup of coffee! Begin by connecting with yourself in small, manageable ways. Consistency is key — these small steps build up over time and create space for greater mindfulness and balance.
Kah Fa:
Relax, for me it’s always to be relaxed.
