Question 1:
Can you share with us more about yourself and your family?
Willie's answer

I have a family of 5, including my wife who is a business owner, and our 3 children, aged 15, 12 and 9.

Justine's answer

I am a mom of four, 2 boys and 2 girls, aged 5 to 12. I also run a few businesses on the side, all of which I operate from home. It’s pretty noisy and chaotic at home, but it’s definitely who we are!

Question 2:
How did your professional journey begin?
Willie's answer
It all started in 1999 when my brother introduced me to this industry as he was still looking for a job and thought of doing it part time. He introduced me to his manager, who then managed to convince me to try out this industry. I began my career part time, earning extra income as I was studying ACCA after serving my NS. It was only after experiencing a successful claim within my first year that I decided to commit to this industry full time, as it significantly shifted my perspective on this career.
Justine's answer
I’m always super thankful to a friend who gave me the opportunity to start a business with minimal capital (we always know that is the toughest part, to put in money into something you don’t know if it will even work). It also helped that these were products that we used at home with the kids as well, so felt that we really wanted to share this with other parents who have the same skincare issues as we did!

Question 3:
How do you balance the demands of running a business with the responsibilities of parenting children of different age groups?
Willie's answer
I must say, nurturing and caring for our children truly requires both parents to work hand in hand. During the early years when they were young, it was hectic but also incredibly rewarding.  Now that they are older and more independent, we find ourselves with more time to focus on running our businesses.
Justine's answer
It took a while, as the number of kids grew (not just in age but also in numbers). Family always comes first. I also have a super hands-on husband who is supportive of the business and helps with both the kids and on the home front too. It would be nice to grow the business but maybe when the kids are older.

Question 4:
Can you share some tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance while also being present for your children during crucial developmental stages?
Willie's answer

Many of us parents resonate with the sentiment that watching our children grow up day by day can make time seem to fly. Therefore, every developmental milestone is so precious – once missed it’s never going to repeat again. Even if you have a second child, each individual is uniquely different. Moreover, when we work hard it is usually for the sake of our families, so for me family always comes first before work.

Fortunately, our industry allows us to control our time and schedules. This allows me to prioritise spending ample time with my kids, especially during their formative years. I make it a point to free up my weekends for my family and spend quality time with them.

Justine's answer
I think being firm with boundaries is important. I block out time during the day where I don’t touch anything business related and dedicate this time to the kids. Kids are sensitive to when parents are mindfully present. It doesn’t have to be long periods of time, but even just 1-2 hours is good, especially for working parents.

Question 5:
What are some creative ways you incorporate your children into your business or involve them in entrepreneurial activities to instill valuable skills and principles?
Willie's answer
I’ve involved my eldest son in researching investments and allowed him to start investing with a small capital in shares and unit trusts, kickstarting his journey in financial literacy and wealth building.
Justine's answer
They help with stock taking, dropping off parcels and even help out at pop ups or fairs that I have had previously. And also, they are very much part of my social media account hahaha. I use them as models and thankfully they are happy to oblige. I think they have picked up some financial principles (I hope so!) and understand that money doesn’t really come easy when they see the hours I put into the business. They are also more independent when they know I have to be away on some days.
Question 6:
Can you share any memorable experiences or lessons learned from juggling the demands of work with the joys and challenges of raising children?
Willie's answer
With 3 kids, especially when they were very young, juggling responsibilities was always challenging, especially during overseas work trips or conferences. But I am glad I have passed that phase and they have all grown into mature and independent individuals.
Justine's answer
I learnt so much from my kids. They really keep things so simple, and really don’t think so much when it comes to selling things. Having the kids see how I operate my business (they ask loads of questions) means they actually want to try and sell something themselves. From cookies (cold calling relatives) to rubber bands (1 for 50c, 2 for 80c, and what more, it is free rubber band from chicken rice packet). If they can be so confident, then why not me?
Question 7:
School holiday is over. Any tips on kids friendly and affordable places or activities that parents can keep their children occupied?
Willie's answer
Science Centre, Zoo and indoor playgrounds were my most frequent places when they were young. As they grow older and start having more friends, we also organize playdates for them that include cycling at East Coast,  BBQ, swimming or just to chill at home playing video games. It is also a great way to get to know their friends better. Other than that, we also go on overseas trips during their school holidays.
Justine's answer
We try to regularly compile free activities for parents on our social media account cos wah, who got so much money to keep spending on activities! Few mentions would be going cycling, museums (SG has loads of kids friendly museums!) and even going to the outdoor nature playgrounds. Do keep a look out for the Children’s Season by the National Heritage Board, we participate in this every year!

Question 8:
Now something interesting – You are given 24 hours without your mobile devices, your children and your spouse. What is your plan for the day?
Willie's answer
I will go swimming and just laze around the poolside having “me” time.
Justine's answer
Go for a long walk (usually around 16km), go for a nice facial, nap, head out for a nice dinner with my girlfriends!
